Revised plans for a mixed-use scheme in Blackpool, considered to be a positive step towards the regeneration of a site opposite the Winter Gardens, look set to secure approval.Lined up is a part-three, part-four and part-five storey building on the corner of Church Street and Abingdon Street. On the ground floor would be retail space, a restaurant and a betting shop. These would sit underneath 19 apartments.A previously withdrawn application was for a part-six and part-seven storey building comprising 29 apartments on the upper floors. The planning statement submitted to Blackpool Council notes that the scheme has been designed to replace buildings that “do not contribute positively” to the Town Centre Conservation Area.It would also ‘preserve and enhance’ the character and appearance of the site.A report drawn up ahead of Blackpool Council’s planning committee meeting today (6 July) notes that some jobs may be lost as a result of the closure of the existing commercial units on the ground floor until they are replaced.Approval has been recommended.
