Plans for a new college campus in Leeds, including education facilities, a sports complex and a residential development, have been given the green light.Leeds City College, part of Luminate Education Group, submitted outline plans to Leeds City Council last summer for a development on Mabgate.Located between Macaulay Street and Mabgate, the scheme would transform a currently derelict site.About 210,000 sq ft of education space is proposed, including theatre, studio and sports space, supporting administration, services and ancillary uses. The plans also include a residential element of either 112 flats or 216 student bedspaces, as well as a shop and café/restaurant.The existing Victorian-era brick building, Studio 24, will be retained and refurbished to be used as an entrance to the campus, with the remainder of the buildings on the site demolished. The council has now granted planning permission for the development, subject to conditions, under delegated powers. The development has been designed by Leeds-based architecture practice Cartwright Pickard, with JLL as planning consultant. The outline approval establishes the principles of the project, with further project details set to emerge in a future reserved matters application.
