Patrick Lynch proposes terraced housing in rural Shropshire

Lynch Architects has unveiled proposals for a terraced housing development at Soulton Hall, near Wem in ShropshireThe Soulton Leasow project, currently at pre-application stage, is for 30 private sale and social rent homes on a 1.6ha site a short distance from the Grade II-listed historic Soulton Hall.Lynch’s ‘rural civic’ concept for the plot will see Passivhaus-inspired homes arranged in two terraces on either side of an apple orchard.Other elements will include a mound-shaped parking area, a colonnaded community hall, garden allotments and new footpaths.The larger homes will feature a central atrium and lightwell and all units will include their own private garden and bike shed.The project is part of a wider masterplan by Lynch for the farm estate surrounding Soulton Hall, which includes a newly-built mound known as the Soulton Barrow and a performance space dubbed The Sanctuary.Giles Smith, a founding member of Turner Prize-winning practice Assemble, drew up plans for a gateway to the new 1.2ha mound in 2018.Public consultation for Soulton Leasow is currently underway and an outline planning application is expected later this year.
