Work to resume on Mermaid Quay refurbishment

Refurbishment work is set to restart on Cardiff Bay’s Mermaid Quay dining and leisure destination next month, Schroder UK Real Estate Fund (SREF) has announced.Planning permission for a comprehensive package of public realm works was granted in 2018 and the initial phases, including redecoration, new wall finishes and high level signage, were completed in 2019. However, the remaining works were halted due to Covid-19.The refurbishment of the 150,000 sq ft centre, which has welcomed more than 100 million visitors since it opened in 1999, is due to resume from 6 September.Works will include the creation of a new landscaped public space in Tacoma Square, at the heart of Mermaid Quay overlooking Cardiff BayThe plans also include new lighting and cladding to the bridge that spans Bute Street, together with a bilingual message ‘Mwynha Dy Ddiwrnod / Enjoy Your Day’, as well as new lighting along the water’s edge on the Lower Boardwalk.The works are scheduled to be completed just before Easter 2022.
