Contest challenges emerging talents to rethink London youth hostel

An international contest – judged by Phillip Christou – is being held to retrofit and revamp the Grade II-listed Astor Victoria youth hostel in Pimlico, central London [Deadline: 30 September 2021]Open to architects, designers and postgraduate students aged under 35 years old – the competition seeks ‘compelling ideas’ to upgrade the low-cost hotel which occupies two neighbouring 1860s villas on Belgrave Road close to Victoria train station.The estimated £1 million project, backed by site owner Astor Hostels and planned to complete in 2024, will transform a series of ‘constricted spaces to create beautiful and functional rooms and common areas.’ The overall winner will receive £3,000 and an opportunity to deliver their concept.Founded in 1974, Astor Hostels is one of the oldest independent youth hostel organisations in Europe. The organisation operates four hostels in London including the Astor Victoria which is located inside two grand 1860s town houses located a short distance from Darbourne & Darke’s iconic Lillington Gardens.The free-to-enter competition challenges designers to ‘pioneer compelling ideas in travel and hospitality’ which could help to upgrade the hostel in time for an anticipated recovery in international tourism following the pandemic. Key aims include creating an ‘appealing aesthetic’ and providing a better visitor experience.Submissions will be judged on their originality, creativity, design, feasibility, innovation and quality of presentation. Applications should include an 800-word project description and two A1 posters presenting the concept.Judges will include Phillip Christou, director of Florian Beigel Architects; James Binning of Assemble; Giuseppe Grant from Rome-based studio Orizzontale; Giulia Ricci of Domus; and Alex Rivers, managing director of Astor Hostels.The overall winner, to be announced on 22 October, will receive £3,000 along with free transport to London and accommodation to work on the design development.
