Planning committee could give go-ahead to almost 2,000 more student beds

Four major student accommodation schemes are set to go before Nottingham City Council’s planning committee today (September 22), which, if voted through, could see almost 2,000 more student beds being added to the city centre.The committee will decide on plans to build a major 702-bed student scheme at the Island Quarter development. The designs – drawn up by DAY Architects and submitted by Conygar – show a purpose-built student development, featuring studio and cluster apartments.Meanwhile, Fusion Students will find out whether or not it will be able build a multi-use development called King Edward Court that would house 568 students, 96 residential units and ground floor commercial space. The scheme is being designed by Corstorphine and Wright.Nottingham developer Bildurn is set to discover whether it will get the go-ahead to build a 294-bed student accommodation scheme on Huntingdon Street in the city. Franklin Ellis is the architect on the development.Finally, developer Watkin Jones will find out whether it can build 354 student flats at 135-137 Lower Parliament Street, on land which is now used as surface car parking. Student accommodation management company Fresh has been lined up to run the scheme, which would include 48 car parking spaces.All four schemes have been tipped for approval by Nottingham City Council’s planning bosses ahead of the committee meeting this afternoon.
