Plans for Gateshead retail development set to move forward
Plans for the redevelopment of land to build a showroom and retail space in Gateshead look set to move forward. The application by Barker and Stonehouse proposes the demolition of an existing commercial unit located to the north of the Metrocentre, making up part of the retail park.The proposed 47,000 sq ft building will comprise of a ground floor, mezzanine floors and a terrace café incorporated into the rooftop.The development would also create a car park with 63 car parking spaces including accessible spaces, electric vehicle charging points and staff cycle parking.The application is scheduled to go before Gateshead Council on Wednesday, 4 November with the recommendation that permission be grantedA report prepared by the planners said that the application “would result in the creation of a development of high design quality, with excellent sustainability credentials on an important gateway site.”The proposed site at present comprises of a vacant commercial building, a retail premises and a public house. There is also a smaller single story commercial premises located on the site, the only occupier being Greggs, which will be retained.
