Care facility tipped for approval
A 51-bed care facility for older people in Tynemouth looks set to progress. The scheme by Sea Island Developments proposes the accommodation on a 1.2-acre site at the former Tynemouth Victoria Jubilee Infirmary. The development site forms part of a wider masterplan which includes outline approval for housing, as well as a recently built Aldi store. The proposed development is likely to accommodate residents with an average age of 80 and will provide personal care and support services, on site catering, first responder medical assistance in emergencies and 24-hour support staff. The facility will also have communal facilities such as a shared activity room and kitchen, accessible WC’s, a buggy store and laundry room along with two external terraces and a break-out space. Each apartment will comprise an open plan kitchen, living space and hallway along with a double bedroom and a bathroom. The scheme is also expected to provide employment across the 15-month construction phase including 47 direct jobs and 71 indirect jobs. The application said that the local construction jobs will also bring increased spending into the area, benefitting local shops, services and facilities. The proposal will go before North Tyneside council on Tuesday 15 February with the recommendation for approval.
