Full steam ahead for £12m rail depot revamp

Plans for a multimillion-pound expansion of engineering facilities and important refurbishment works to a grade II-listed workshop in Bury have been approved.Bury planning chiefs gave a unanimous thumbs up to the proposals for The Buckley Wells Locomotive Depot, an important part of the East Lancashire Railway (ELR) overall operations.The heritage railway successfully applied to Bury Council to carry out a restoration of the grade II-listed locomotive works. It was built in 1857 and is the oldest engineering workshop in the world still in operation.The plans allow the construction of a new locomotive running shed, the incorporation of associated new workshops and training facilities and the building of a standalone carriage shed.
