Sunderland regeneration scheme moves forward
Plans for a job-creating multi-unit service station on a prominent site in Sunderland have taken their latest step forward. The £20m regeneration project by Jomast Developments comprises 80.7 sq ft of industrial and warehouse space alongside a number of trade counter units, a 21.5 sq ft food store as well as food and drink facilities and a petrol station. The development will be located on a 12.3-acre site adjacent to the Sunderland Transport Corridor. The proposed site was previously occupied by buildings associated with the former glass works, but has been vacant for more than 15 years.A digital consultation was launched in February which outlined plans for the site, including the creation of 135 jobs throughout the construction phase, alongside 300 full-time roles once completed and taken on by operators. With the consultation coming to an end, Jomast has now submitted a formal screening opinion to help determine whether the development should be subject to an environmental impact assessment. The report notes that the develop believes the scheme “does not give rise to a need for EIA.”The proposal will go before Sunderland City Council is due course.
