The planned redevelopment of the former University of Law Chester campus for residential use has been backed.Cheshire West and Chester Council’s planning committee voted through plans by Bridgemere Land for 42 homes and an office building at Christleton Hall.Proposals will see the demolition of late 20th century buildings and conversion of Christleton Hall into 18 apartments, four of which would be affordable. Also built would be a further 24 two-storey homes and an office building within the walled garden on the Pepper Street site in Chrisleton, Chester. As well as this, landscaping, parking and other works are included in the plans.Comprising approximately 6.8 acres of land, the application site is located within the conservation area and North Cheshire Green Belt.Occupying it is Christleton Hall and associated buildings which are all now vacant, having previously been used by Chester Law School. The hall occupies the entrance to the site and is grade II-listed, dating from the 18th century and having undergone alterations and extensions over the years. There is also an existing walled garden. The application has been passed despite plans for the site being rejected in the past. Opponents have also raised concerns about the impact of the plans on the Green Belt. However, an officer’s report considered by Cheshire West planners said that, as, the development would make a small contribution to meeting an identified affordable housing need in Cheshire West and Chester, it would not be inappropriate in the Green Belt.
