Apartment plan for former nightclub set for green light

Plans for an apartment development at the site of a former nightclub in Newport are set to move forward after being recommended for approval.Linc Cymru is seeking permission for the demolition of the rear portion of 40 Stow Hill, formerly known as Zanzibar, to make way for the construction of two new apartment blocks, providing 37 affordable flats and parking.The façade and side return walls would be retained under the plans.40 Stow Hill is a grade II-listed building. It dates from 1863 and it is listed for its contribution of grand classical front to Stow Hill conservation area. The property sits adjacent to Bethel community church and both buildings were damaged as a result of a fire in 2018.The redevelopment of the prominent brownfield site has been recommended for approval ahead of a Newport City Council planning committee next week.According to a report to be scrutinised by councillors, the proposed development is considered acceptable and would secure the future of this listed building, “which has suffered significantly from fire damage, neglect and unsympathetic alterations”.The scheme is also said to represent an opportunity to restore the façade to its historic appearance, “as well as delivering much needed affordable housing”.
