Apartment development proposed for Kelham Island site
A new development of more than 120 apartments could be built on a site in Sheffield’s Kelham Island area if newly submitted plans get the go-ahead.RS Sabkha Construction and Developments Ltd has submitted a full planning application to Sheffield City Council for the redevelopment of a site on Corporation Street.Planning permission is sought for the demolition of the existing buildings on the land and construction of a new six-storey building. The development would comprise 122 apartments, with a mix of studios, one- and two-bedroom units. Ground floor commercial units would be created facing Alma Street and Corporation Street. The proposals also include ten parking spaces, cycle storage, landscaping and amenity space.Sheffield-based practice CODA Architecture has designed 180 Shalesmoor, marking its third collaboration with RSSabkha Construction & Developments and Broadfield Project Management in Kelham Island.CODA managing director Matt Bowker said: “Kelham Gate, Great Central and Cotton Mill Row are in the heart of the increasingly popular former industrial heartland of the city, an area that is being transformed by imaginative design that combines the very best of Sheffield’s industrial heritage with great 21st century design.”We have worked on many developments in Kelham Island and around Shalesmoor and Neepsend and we are confident that 180 Shalesmoor will prove to be as successful as all our earlier projects.”CODA Studios is, of course, based in Kelham Island and we have been passionate supporters of the regeneration of this historic part of Sheffield for many years now.”The design our team drew up for this latest site is excellent and very much in keeping with the ambience of the surrounding area and we can’t wait to see the next step taken in the Kelham Island success story.”This is a high profile, sitting right alongside a busy main route into the city and, as such, deserves a development of the highest specifications.”CODA nearby project Cotton Mill Ro, comprising 90 apartments and commercial units in a four-storey development on the adjacent site, is nearing completion. The team has previously work on Kelham Gate and the Great Central, a nine-storey 131-apartment complex in nearby Neepsend.
