Plans lodged for new hotel at Cameron Toll Shopping Centre
Plans lodged for new hotel at Cameron Toll Shopping CentreThe reimagination of the 1980s shopping centre follows a public consultation exercise on a new masterplan and future vision for what is being described as a community neighbourhood centre and includes 3DReid designs.Along with the new hotel, which will operate as a Hampton by Hilton, significant improvements are planned to how Cameron Toll integrates with the surrounding area.By improving accessibility to nearby Inch Park and by promoting walking, cycling and the use of public transport, it is hoped that Cameron Toll can further enhance these spaces, whilst making the wider area easier and more attractive for pedestrians and cyclists to navigate.3DReid said: “The proposals have been extensively discussed with City of Edinburgh Council’s planning team. There is a shared aspiration to create a Local Centreat Cameron Toll which supports the local community’s physical and social well-being while improving the quality, density and accessibility of the built environment.“The proposals will create a new heart for the local community that supports the key objectives of the council’s Local Development Plan.”The practice added: “Alongside the provision of a more varied offering, including a cinema, a hotel, and residential accommodation, the heart of the masterplan focuses on connecting people and creating a sense of place. New safe pedestrian routes and secure public space will be provided, connecting the centre to the surrounding parks and community spaces to the east, and creating an active frontage to Liberton Road and the residential neighbourhoods to the west.”Should the planning application be approved, it is anticipated that work would begin on site in 2023, with the hotel open and welcoming its first guests in early 2025.
