Approval for Plymouth shopping centre

Plans for a multimillion-pound district shopping centre on the edge of Plymouth have been approved by local planners.Consent has been given by Plymouth City Council to transform the former Seaton Barracks Parade Ground site at Derriford.A new district centre is proposed, which would create more than 100 jobs and safeguard a further 57.Three brands have already been secured including M&S, Aldi and Costa. The development will also include a gym, pet shop, a further, smaller retail unit and 12 rapid EV charging points.It will be built by ADC Kimberley, which was selected as the council’s preferred developer in October 2019 following a competitive bidding process.Jonathan Banham, director of ADC Kimberley, said: “We are pleased to have received the support of Plymouth City Council for our proposals, which will breathe new life into the former Seaton Barracks site.”This new retail and leisure hub will serve many local people who are living, working and studying in the area, while also creating shopping facilities which will reduce the need for them to travel further afield.”We will now be working through the finer details of the scheme with the various tenants and hope later in the summer to be able to confirm when work will begin.”Deputy leader and cabinet member for economic development councillor Mark Shayer added: “The council has a huge role in encouraging investment into our city.”This site was designated as a preferred site for a new district centre in the Joint Local Plan in 2019 and we have been working to deliver this.”Getting planning permission is a significant step on the way to creating this new district centre and the companies being lined up to become part of this new centre offer good job prospects for Plymouth people.
