Approval lined up for homes on disused stadium site
A housing development proposed for a brownfield site currently occupied by a disused stadium in Coventry looks set to be green lit.Brandon Estates has brought forward outline plans to redevelop land at Coventry Stadium on Rugby Road. The site was previously used for stock car, speedway and greyhound racing, which ceased in 2016.Proposals involve the construction of 124 homes, comprising a mix of two-, three- and four-bedroom units. The scheme, of which 20 per cent would be affordable housing, would also provide a 3G football pitch with a pavilion.A statement filed on behalf of the applicant with Rugby Borough Council – whose planning committee meets on 14 September – said: “The site will be able to deliver much-needed housing in an accessible location to facilities in Binley Woods and Brandon, including affordable provision for the borough in the near future.”Furthermore, housing development also makes an important contribution to the local economy in its own right. It creates employment and skills development opportunities for construction workers and also generates increased retail expenditure in the local economy.”A report for the committee added: “The proposal will result in a conflict with the housing mix and affordable housing tenure provision policies. However, this holds limited weight and the harm is minimal due to a wide choice of homes suitable for this location would still be provided.”Weighed against this harm is the economic benefits which hold significant weight and the environmental and social benefits hold moderate weight.”Approval has been recommended, subject to conditions.
