Manchester Council approves plans for 700 new homes in Newton Heath
Manchester City Council has approved plans for more than 700 new homes, a secondary school, a park, and a community hub in Newton Heath. The 47-acre site, once home to Jacksons Brickworks, has been unused for decades and had latterly been used for landfill. The proposals detail Phase 1 of the development: 378 homes, a community hub building, and landscaping. The proposals also outline Phase 2, which will see the delivery of 338 homes and a new school secondary school. The development will be delivered by Your Housing Group and will seek to transform the brownfield site into a “vibrant” neighbourhood with a mix of house types, including apartments and housing available for various tenures – including affordable rent and shared ownership.Your Housing Group has worked with Manchester City Council and local councillors to design the scheme, and the group has carried out two separate rounds of consultation to inform the local residents of the proposals.Your Housing Group says this approach was taken to ensure that the plans delivered the best outcomes for both the city and the local community.Jacque Allen, chief executive for Your Housing Group, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have officially secured planning permission for this exciting and significant development.“It will completely transform this large site to bring both housing, community, and economic benefits to the area.“I would like to thank the team at Manchester City Council for their support, and the local residents who have taken their time to give their input to help us shape a development that will benefit everyone.”Cllr Gavin White, Manchester City Council’s executive member for Housing and Development, said: “We know that this site has a huge amount of potential and its redevelopment will be transformational for Newton Heath.“Your Housing Group are not only bringing a brownfield piece of land to deliver a large number of low-carbon affordable homes for our residents, but they are bringing life back to a major site that has historically been an important part of this community.“We also know how welcome the new secondary school, sports facilities and community space will be to local people.“This development will prove to be a real exemplar in mixed-use community regeneration.”Your Housing Group acquired the site in February 2020.The group has been working closely with Manchester City Council to move forward with the development, having previously secured planning permission to remediate the site in 2021.Detailed plans for a secondary school, which will be built in the heart of the development, are set to be submitted in a separate planning application.Your Housing Group has agreed to dispose of a portion of the site to the Department of Education to deliver the new school.
