Electricity Connection Project
Type of document: Contract Notice
Country: United Kingdom
1. Title: ELECTRICITY CONNECTION PROJECT
2. Awarding Authority: Natrional Grid, GB Email: www.northwalesconnection.com. Web:
3. Contract type: Supply contract
4. Description: About the Opportunity:
The North Wales Connection Project will connect new low carbon energy in the Specified Location to the electricity network.
Horizon Nuclear Power is developing Wylfa Newydd, a new nuclear power station in North Anglesey.
There is an existing electricity network in Anglesey and north Gwynedd, but the amount of power from the new power station means new infrastructure is needed.
We are proposing a new line from Wylfa to Pentir in Gwynedd. It includes a new overhead line in close parallel to an existing line, a tunnel under the Menai Strait with the associated infrastructure this needs, and extensions to two substations. We will also need a number of temporary access roads and lay down areas while the connection is built.
The scale of our projects means that there are great opportunities for local businesses while we’re working in the area.
Our project is currently in the planning process to achieve consent to be built. If it’s given the go ahead, we expect construction to begin in the early 2020s.
We’re inviting local and regional suppliers to register their interest in being part of the North Wales Connection Project.
We will be looking for suppliers to fulfil a wide range of contracts. This will likely include groundworks, scaffolding, fencing, tree planting, maintenance and other similar roles. These contracts will not necessarily be directly with National Grid, but could also be through our tier one contractors.

About the buyer’s selection process:
National Grid intends to award separate design and build contracts for the proposed overhead line, tunnel and substation works associated with the North Wales Connection Project.
The process for this is through tendering whereby National Grid will assess bids from several Contractors and award the works based on robust selection criteria. Each successful contractor may subsequently subcontract elements of the works using their own selection process. Currently National Grid has not commenced the above process therefore the full process is not yet known. Project currently in consenting stage, and unlikely to be granted before 2020.
About the buyer:
We own and operate the electricity transmission network in England and Wales, with day-to-day responsibility for balancing supply and demand. We operate but do not own the Scottish networks. Our networks comprise approximately* 7,200 kilometres (4,474 miles) of overhead line, 1,500 kilometres (932 miles) of underground cable and 342 substations.
We are moving away from a historical reliance on large thermal power generation and there is now a greater diversity of supply and flexible demand than ever before. Therefore, the electricity transmission network has a central role to play in the future energy mix, with evolving roles enabling a range of possible energy futures for the long-term benefit of consumers.
