University outlines major student living proposals
A Birmingham university has outlined plans to create more than 1,200 beds of student accommodation in blocks rising to 34 storeys.University College Birmingham’s proposals involve redeveloping the current campus accommodation on Brindley Drive. Built in the 1970s, the organisation said Cambrian Halls no longer meets the modern-day requirements needed for student living.The new buildings will create in excess of 1,200 beds, enabling all University College Birmingham students to live in one building – Cambrian Wharf. Currently, almost 850 students live in a different University College Birmingham site on Granville Street, The Maltings.University College Birmingham is progressing a full planning application for the development, which is split into two blocks – 34-storey Canal Block and 14-storey Courtyard Block. In addition to bedrooms, students will benefit from improved student amenities and communal spaces.Mark Payne, executive director of finance and corporate services at University College Birmingham, said: “The proposals for the redevelopment of our existing student accommodation offer will strengthen the University’s ability to offer a world-class, supportive student experience in well-located, good value, quality accommodation.”This redevelopment provides an opportunity to widen the choice and supply of student bedrooms whilst ensuring they are fulfilling the requirements of future students studying at the University.”Subject to securing planning permission, it is anticipated that development would start at the end of 2024.
