Habinteg joins Walsall firm on 18-unit social housing build
Habinteg Housing Association and a Walsall construction company have joined forces to develop accessible and general needs homes on a former care home site in Walsall.Habinteg is set to transform the site, which closed in 2017, into an 18-unit block of flats called Mali Jenkins House.Six of the homes will be fully wheelchair accessible, while the block itself is set to be energy efficient and feature a landscaped communal garden and parking court. All 18 homes will be let to local people nominated by Walsall Council, helping to reduce the housing waiting list in the area.Habinteg will manage the properties and tenancies.Matt Kelly, head of Development, said: “I’m extremely excited to finally be able to get started with works on the site of the former Mali Jenkins House.“The proposed scheme will provide much needed affordable, accessible dwellings for local people.“We’re also pleased to be able to continue our commitment to working with locally based SME contractors, providing jobs in the wider Walsall area.”Mike Harvey, group commercial director, Harper Group, said: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Habinteg to deliver much needed affordable housing.“As a local contractor to Walsall, we’re looking forward to engaging with the local supply chain and transforming this brownfield site into a vibrant area for the local community.”Work is due to be complete in September 2024.Read next: Infrared wallpaper used to heat 31 homes in ‘groundbreaking’ clean-tech trialAre you a social housing professional?
