Council set to give green light to Homes England scheme

Birmingham City Council is set to approve a 750-home scheme at the City Hospital West site, subject to a Section 106 agreement.Homes England is looking to demolish the existing buildings, to allow for the redevelopment of a “new sustainable community” with a mixture of family-sized homes and apartments. The scheme will retain the former Infirmary Building frontage block, to be converted into residential accommodation.More than 8,000 sq ft of commercial and community floor space on the retained Infirmary Building forms part of the plans, as well as public open space and a large car park.New site access points would also be created on Norman Street, Aberdeen Street and Western Road, with the existing access off Crabtree Road retained.The Section 106 legal agreement sets out that Homes England must ensure that 35% of housing is classed as affordable, provide a £227,500 contribution to improve Asylum Bridge, Norman Street and All Saints Park alongside another contribution towards the provision of children’s play equipment and local employment. The proposed development also cannot conflict with relevant policies from the Birmingham Development Plan and NPPF.
