Construction compound to facilitate new station
Permission has been granted for a temporary construction compound to facilitate the building of a new station in Cardiff.An application proposes the use of land off Roath Dock Road for the compound to support the construction of a new station at Butetown. This is together with upgrades to the existing station at Cardiff Bay.The application site comprises a disused car park and area of hardstanding by the Roath Dock.The temporary construction compound would be required for of period of 18 months.It would provide for laydown areas for construction materials, plant and machinery, offices and welfare buildings, parking for site contractors and HGVs, vehicle manoeuvring for HGVs, and general construction and assembly areas.In the summer of 2022, Transport for Wales (TfW) confirmed plans to build a new two-platform station in the north of Butetown.The existing Cardiff Bay station will also be enhanced, as well as getting new signage, customer information screens and other improvements. Cardiff Bay station will remain open for passengers while the work is taking place.Installation of a new track will allow faster and more frequent services using new tram-trains, enabling a new timetable to be introduced from 2024.Cardiff Council has granted permission for the proposed temporary construction compound under delegated powers.
