Detailed plans for a development of more than 90 homes on the site of a former factory in South Yorkshire look set to get the green light next week (5 September 2023).Netherton Homes, supported by JRP, submitted a reserved matters application to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council in 2021 for development on the former William Freeman factory site off Wakefield Road.Planning permission is sought for the construction of 91 homes, comprising a mix of two-, three- and four-bedroom properties in ten different house types. Fourteen affordable housing units are proposed. The plans also include public open space and ecological areas. The application originally proposed 102 homes, with the number reduced following discussions on the layout and in response to consultee comments. The application will be considered by the council’s planning regulatory board on 5 September and is recommended for approval, subject to conditions, in an officer’s report prepared for the meeting. The site was formerly used by William Freeman for the manufacture of rubber and plastic products, prior to its closure in 2006. The former factory units having since been demolished.Outline planning permission for residential development on the site was granted in 2018.This scheme also included details of a new Lidl foodstore, which has now been built.
