Plans unveiled for student build at triangular Edinburgh site
Under the plans, the shop and showroom located at 185-187 Dundee Street and 4/5 Dundee Terrace will be demolished and replaced with a six-storey block containing 206 beds and commercial space on the ground floor.Flow Design Architects is the lead architect for the project on behalf of Glencairn Properties.Describing the project on its website, the practice said: “Located to the west end of Dundee Street and spanning south onto Dundee Terrace, this landmark building will rise from a busy juncture of the Merchiston, Dalry, Fountainbridge, and Slateford districts.“The shape and format of the site, colloquially known as a gushet, provides an opportunity to introduce a strong corner aesthetic which will act as a landmark to signify the change in direction of Dundee St at the junction with Dundee Terrace.“Massing of the proposals has been carefully considered and evolved into an organic form that reflects the movement, flow and dynamism of the site’s history, position and geometry. The resulting body seeks to reconcile and respect the traditional form and urban grain to the south and the fast flowing transport infrastructure that envelopes it.“Recognising the importance of life quality, a number of contrasting external spaces are proposed at various levels to enhance the lifestyle of the inhabitants and a roof terrace will boast panoramic views to the north across the capital city.”The project team also includes HarrisonStevens, Will Rudd, Gardiner & Theobald and Rybka.
