Manchester Digital Campus gets green light

The Manchester Digital Campus, a state-of-the-art government office complex, has received planning consent. The project, led by the Government Property Agency (GPA), will transform the former Central Retail Park in Ancoats into a major hub for digital skills and Civil Service operations.

With contracts exchanged for five-and-a-half acres of prime city land, the development will drive significant employment and economic benefits in the region, creating 7,000 new jobs and reinforcing Manchester’s reputation as a leading tech and digital hub.

Construction and Regeneration Plans

The GPA and Manchester City Council have collaborated closely on the project, ensuring a balance between commercial development and urban regeneration. Alongside the Digital Campus, plans include a new city centre park, enhancing green space and integrating with existing pedestrian and cycling networks.

Designed by Planit-IE, the park will feature:

• Green buffer zones along Great Ancoats Street
• Tiered gardens, play areas, and tranquil space
• Walking and cycling routes, improving connectivity to key areas including Ancoats, Northern Quarter, and the Etihad Campus

Mark Bourgeois, CEO of the GPA, welcomed the approval, stating: “We are delighted with this decision and grateful for the support of Manchester’s stakeholders. This development is a key step in supporting the transformation of the Civil Service and driving growth in the region.”

Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, added: “This low-carbon development will bring thousands of jobs to Manchester while reinforcing our status as one of the UK’s fastest-growing tech and digital communities.”
