1,200-bed student accommodation plans lodged

A series of new buildings providing accommodation for more than 1,200 students could be built on an industrial site on the edge of Leeds city centre if newly-submitted plans are given the go-ahead.Student accommodation specialist Future Generation has submitted an application to Leeds City Council for the redevelopment of a site close to hope Foundry in the Mabgate area of the city.Planning permission is sought for the demolition of the existing buildings on the site and construction of six new blocks of between two and ten storeys, with total floorspace of about 387,000 sq ft.The new buildings would provide a total of 1,218 bedrooms, across 332, apartments, with a mix of cluster flats and studios.The scheme would also include 8,130 sq ft of commercial space on the ground floor, suitable for retail, café, restaurant and gym use.The development is located within the council’s Mabgate Development Framework area, which sets out guidelines for development in the area.The site currently comprises a number of buildings in use as office, warehouse and storage units, as well as two surface car parks. The Black Horse pub is located on the South West corner and would be retained under the plans.Planning permission was previously granted in 2010 for a development comprising 425 residential units in a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom properties.Future Generation was supported in its application by Turley and Fluid Design.
