£125 million plans submitted for new homes at Govan Graving Docks
Plans for a housing development at Govan Graving Docks have been submitted to Glasgow City Council. The proposals, led by New City Vision and designed by Glasgow-based architects O’Donnell Brown, would see the construction of up to 304 new homes on the southern boundary of the site, extending the broader Govan community and bringing life back to the 19th century docks. The submission marks the latest milestone in a wider masterplan to regenerate the three docks, with work already underway to reopen Dock No1 for historic ship repair, with future phases including the development of a heritage park and restore the Pumphouse – the sole remaining building on the site – into a visitor centre. The submitted proposals outline that the new homes will take up just 20% of the overall site footprint, with the other 80% set to be transferred to community ownership. The plans also follow a period of community consultation from the developers.Harry O’Donnell, chair of New City Vision, said: “As this proposal has been the subject of extensive community consultation over the past two years, I would like to thank all those who have provided feedback throughout the consultation process, and I look forward to continuing this engagement as we bring forward our proposals for the component parts of our wider vision.”It is anticipated that a decision will be reached by Glasgow City Council by the spring. The council has secured funding from the Scottish Government (£2.4m) and Sustrans (£200,000) to support the site’s redevelopment. The docks were built in the late 19th century by the Clyde Navigation Trust and, at the time, could accommodate some the largest ships in the world. They were used for winter overhauls, repairs and refits of Clyde steamers, up until their closure in 1987, but since then, they have remained derelict.Don’t miss the latest headlines with our twice-daily newsletter – sign up here for free.
