78-bedroom hotel, pub and drive-through plan for Workington

Plans have been revealed for a 78-bedroom hotel, a pub and drive-through cafe to be built in Workington.Hinton Group, which specialises in commercial developments, is behind the plans to build a Travelodge hotel, a drive-through Costa Coffee and an adjacent Marston’s pub and restaurant on land between William Street and Church Street.It has submitted a planning application to Allerdale council to deliver the project, which it says would create between 80 and 100 new jobs.Barbara Cannon, mayor of Workington, welcomed the plans.Allerdale council is hoping to host the Rugby League World Cup in 2021 and if an application for Heritage Lottery funding to revamp Hall Park was successful, the town could be hosting events and plays in the park, as well as in its already popular theatres.She added the location of the new leisure facilities was ideal because it would be within walking distance from the railway station and the town centre.The hotel would be homed in a four-story building with a bar and cafe and 94 parking spaces would serve both the hotel and Costa Coffee building.The Marston’s pub, which would be in a separate building, would have a small play area and a separate car park with 60 spaces, including cycle spaces.An area of green space would be preserved at the western end of the site to help retain views of the nearby St Michael’s Church and The Old Rectory.The land was owned by Allerdale council which sold it to the Allerdale Investment Partnership, a partnership created to develop council’s surplus land.Marston’s is also planning to build a 150-seat restaurant beside the river Derwent, next to Tesco.It received permission to build the pub by Allerdale council last year.Allerdale council has launched a consultation into the project and people have time until August 3 to comment on the application.
