Description: Local groups and organisations with great ideas to make their communities an even better place to live are now invited to apply for funding to turn their ideas into reality.People’s Health Trust has just launched Active Communities in parts of Specified Location (there is a map on the website showing eligible areas).The funding is raised by Health Lottery Yorkshire and the Humber, and will invest in projects that support people living in neighbourhoods or communities experiencing the most disadvantage. To apply organisations must be not-for-profit groups with an income of less than £350,000 a year, or an average of £350,000 over two years, seeking investment of between £5,000 and £40,000 for projects lasting 1-2 two years, have less than 6 months of yearly expenditure in reserve and have been constituted for at least 3 months. Projects could be almost anything that encourages strong connections between people, and that help people to make their communities or neighbourhoods even better places. The funding will begin in autumn this year, as communities find ways to come back together following lockdown. They are looking for small and local projects, genuinely designed and run by local people. This could be a small group of people on an estate, in a few streets or villages. They are also looking for great ideas from communities of interest. By this, we mean a group of people who have something in common and wish to come together to address something that is important to them. These ideas could be based in one neighbourhood, or cover a wider area, but they must live close enough to each other to meet up regularly.The start date for successful applications is from November 2020, at which point restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic are likely to have changed significantly. The Trust encourages applicants to think about their projects in the medium term. Projects need to be designed and led by local people, support their neighbourhood or community to come together to address an issue that is important to them, create stronger connections between people by supporting them to meet up regularly (weekly, fortnightly or monthly, for at least one year) and be for people who experience greater social and economic disadvantage than people living in other parts of the country5.
