Almost 2,000 jobs step forward as commercial plans lodged
Proposals have been lodged for a commercial development on the site of a former GKN facility in Telford. The project, earmarked for an existing employment area, is forecast to create almost 2,000 jobs.Mercia Real Estate is seeking planning permission to redevelop land off Hadley Castle Works, Hadley.Extending to about 115.1 acres, the site comprises both existing buildings and hardstanding and undeveloped parcels of land forming part of the Hadley Park East employment park.Plans comprise the development of five industrial/commercial units extending to a gross external area of approximately 978,000 sq ft, along with HGV parking.The proposed uses for the development will reflect the existing business park location and are expected to be manufacturing, distribution, light industrial, offices and supporting facilities.It is anticipated that the project would create 1,850 FTE jobs and generate £66.6m gross of wages per annum.A statement filed with Telford and Wrekin Council on behalf of the applicant said: “The development is in a sustainable location with access to the national road network, and will include facilities such as electric vehicle charging points, car share spaces and cycle storage to further encourage and enable sustainable and active travel.”Both the developer and his consultant team are absolutely committed to providing buildings of the highest quality in terms of design, material selection, robust detailing, environmental credentials and inclusivity of access, which will be a sensitive solution that takes full account of the site’s specific characteristics.”The scheme has been designed to be fully inclusive to give tenants and their visitors a well-connected and integrated environment with units incorporating clean sharp lines, crisp functional detailing, a limited range of surface materials and a restricted palette of neutral colours to give a contemporary appearance.”
