Almost 300 sewage works homes set for green light
Almost 300 homes could be constructed on the site of a former sewage works in Birmingham after the proposals were recommended for approval.Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust is behind the scheme for the old Yardley Sewage Works in Cole Hall Lane, Shard End.A total of 298 homes would be constructed on the site if the green light is given by Birmingham City Council at a meeting on Thursday 4 July.The 32.8-acre site would feature 148 for market sale and 150 for social rent to be controlled by the applicant.The sewage works was present on the site from the 1910s until it ceased operation in the 1970s.The application has said that upon closure of the works, it is understood that approximately 18,000m3 of sludge was placed in a mound in the south of the site but it spontaneously combusted in 1978.The proposals were revealed in October.
