Approval for Newcastle United Foundation hub plans

Planning consent has been granted for a multimillion-pound community hub for education, sports and wellbeing in the shadow of St James’ Park.Newcastle United Foundation’s new three-story hub will feature a 4G rooftop pitch with views of the stadium, classrooms, digital hub, four-court sports hall, fitness suite and accessible changing areas, event and meeting spaces and open-plan offices.Newcastle-based Ryder Architecture is behind the designs for the transformation of the former site of Murray House community centre in Newcastle’s West End.The foundation has received a £2.6m investment from the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA) to support young people in the transition from education to work through the NU Futures scheme, to be based in the hub.Newcastle City Council granted planning permission under temporary delegated powers for select proposals during the Covid-19 outbreak.Construction is set to begin in autumn 2020, with the facility potentially opening to the public in autumn 2021.The project team also includes Black and White Engineering, OOBE, SHED and Todd Milburn.
