Approval for Newport apartments
A scheme to build an apartment block in Newport at the site of a used car dealer has been granted planning permission.Newport City Council’s planning committee granted the application with conditions suggested in an officer’s report for the demolition of commercial buildings and construction of a building containing 30 apartments at Gwent Car Sales, Crawford Street.Proposed is a mix of eight two-bed and 22 one-bedroom apartments, with parking and external areas.Currently the site is occupied by a range of car garages and hard standing but is within the settlement boundary. It is allocated within the adopted Local Development Plan for ten residential units and the implementation of a residential scheme on the site has been accepted in principle.The proposed apartments would all be affordable and Newport City Homes has been named as the registered social landlord that will manage the accommodationAn officer’s report for Newport City Council’s planning committee said: “The proposed development is considered to have regeneration benefits and is to make a positive contribution to the visual amenity and character and appearance of the street scape.”The proposed development will maintain highway safety, provide satisfactory levels of amenity for both neighbouring and future occupiers and will provide ecological enhancement.”
