Approval for student scheme on vacant site
Plans for the redevelopment of a former bar and nightclub in Leeds to create a new student accommodation scheme have been given the go-ahead.Brewster Bye Architects, on behalf of developer Urban Developments (York) Ltd, submitted plans to Leeds City Council last year for 26-34 Merrion Street.The property was occupied by Arthur Clues sports goods for a number of years. It was most recently used as the Mayaimi bar but has been vacant for several years.Under the plans, the vacant building is set to be demolished, and a new part-five, part-seven and part nine-storey building constructed comprising 88 studio apartments for students.Offered under the ‘Engage’ brand, all the studios will have en-suites and the new building will also include a lounge, gym, study rooms, a cinema room and laundry facilities for all students. Four of the studios are accessible and there are two larger premium studios.The development will also include a staffed reception area and 23 cycle spaces.The council has now granted planning permission for the development, subject to conditions, under delegated powers.
