Approval secured for medical village development

Proposals for the development of an extensive new medical village with healthcare and residential uses in Rathfriland have been given the seal of approval.Brought forward by MJM Group, the proposals involve the development of a new medical centre with GP surgery and associated ancillary healthcare facilities, as well as a 140 bedroom nursing homes, four retirement homes, 14 assisted living apartments and five townhouses. The works include the demolition of 87, 89, 91 and 95 Newry Street.The project will provide 8,019 sq ft of recommended health centre accommodation, along with approximately 36,000 sq ft of ancillary medical use floor space. Measuring approximately 3.1 acres, the application site currently comprises five terraced properties with agricultural lands to the rear.The proposed village represents an investment from the private sector of circa £26.3m, with around 327 jobs expected to be created during the construction phases. It is also expected that £700,000 to £1m in rates will be generated post completion.The proposals have now been given the green light, subject to conditions.
