An application proposing the conversion of a former Tesco store in Northampton town centre to provide new apartments looks set to advance.Fairgreen Commercial Properties Ltd has brought forward proposals to transform the site of 42-46 Abington Street and The Ridings. It comprises a part three-, part four-storey building previously in use as a Tesco, and a Woolworths store before that.Permission is sought to convert the existing unit to provide three retail spaces, as well as provide 30 one- and two-bedroom apartments on the upper floors. The scheme will be considered by West Northamptonshire Council’s planning committee on 8 June.A report for the committee said: “The proposed development represents an acceptable land use and would not have a significant adverse impact upon the character and appearance of the surrounding area, neighbouring amenity, the highway system, or crime and safety.”Whilst the development will result in limited harm to the historic environment by virtue of the loss of views from far Cotton Bridge, this harm is assessed as being less than substantial and any harm would be outweighed by the public benefits of the scheme.”Members are recommended to approve the application, subject to conditions.
