Balfour bags extra work on Somerset road scheme

North Somerset Council has expanded Balfour Beatty’s role on its North South Spine Road project in Weston Super Mare in order to leverage logistical and programme benefits from the scheme.The original £12.9M work on the 2.2km road scheme to open up land that used to be occupied by RAF Locking for housing development was procured under the Scape National Civil Engineering and Infrastructure framework.The £2.5M contract extension announced late last week in the Official Journal of the European Union includes construction of 60m section of road at the northern end of the scheme to provide a direct link between the A371 and A370, as well as undertake surcharging and other preliminary work to prepare adjacent council owned land for development.The council has said that awarding the work to Balfour Beatty as part of the North South Spine Road works has logistical and program benefits.Balfour was originally awarded the contract in November 2018 and is expected to completed the work by March next year.
