Barracks accommodation block due to move forward
A living accommodation block at a Lancashire barracks site could soon be demolished for a larger replacement if plans are approved at a meeting this week.Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is seeking planning consent for the demolition of a 59-unit block and construction of a replacement three-storey facility of 69 units at Weeton Camp, Weeton Barracks. The proposal forms part of a national strategy of works by the DIO to improve its stock of single living accommodation across the defence estate. The Barracks are occupied by the DIO, part of the Ministry of Defence, and is home to the 2nd Battalion, Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment. The wider Barracks site is vast and extends to more than 123 acres in size, with the area that is developed by buildings extending to approximately 54 acres. The application site is in Singleton Road in the civil parish of Weeton-with-Preese in Fylde. An officer’s report due to be reviewed by Fylde Council’s planning committee at a meeting on Wednesday (7 December) said that the accommodation is “fundamental” in the capability of the DIO to retain and recruit new personnel and for it to continue its defence operations effectively.A recommendation has been made that planning permission be granted subject to conditions.
