Plans for a major student accommodation scheme on a raised platform above the railway line between University Road and Botanic Avenue in Belfast have been recommended for approval.Acting on behalf of applicant Botanic Link Ltd, planning consultancy Turley is seeking permission to construct a four-storey, 253-bed managed student accommodation building. The proposed scheme, located on top of a concrete slab above a railway tunnel, runs the full length of the site from University Road to Botanic Avenue.Although a single building, the development incorporates five interlinked blocks with external courtyard areas.According to a report to be scrutinised by Belfast City Council today (11 June), the principle of purpose built student accommodation is considered acceptable at this location.Located close to the Queens University campus, the proposal is said to be compatible with the surrounding area which is characterised by mixed commercial use with a number of shops, hot food bars, restaurant/cafes and public houses. It is recommended that the proposal should be approved subject to conditions and completion of an agreement under section 76 of the Planning Act (NI) 2011.
