Birmingham tram extension backed by government
The government has approved plans for the West Midland Metro tramway’s Eastside extension in Birmingham.Transport secretary Grant Shapps has given the scheme, which was originally set to be completed in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2022, the green light after it was delayed because of uncertainty around the HS2 Curzon Street station.The tramline will be extended by 1.7km from Bull Street in the city centre to a new terminus in High Street Deritend.The project is part of a £1.5bn package of extensions planned for the region.
