Brighton student scheme set for go-ahead

Plans to demolish a number of homes in Brighton to make way for student accommodation look set to be approved.The land earmarked for development in the application from Teckton Student Living is located to the south of the A27, adjacent to Falmer Station.The plot is currently home to a number of unoccupied flint cottages, which are boarded up.Under the plans, which are recommended for the green light ahead of a Brighton & Hove City Council meeting on Wednesday (6 February 2019), the cottages would be knocked down and replaced with a new four-storey structure.The building would comprise 71 student bedrooms, arranged over 55 cluster beds, 15 studio apartments and one disabled unit.The scheme would also include cycle parking, car parking and landscaping.Councillors are minded to approve the proposals subject to the completion of a section 106 agreement.The head of terms for the deal include a formal agreement being struck between the developer and one of the city’s universities and details of student allocation, a contribution of £6,500 towards local employment and a construction training and employment strategy for the project.The developer would also pay £29,400 towards sustainable transport and £85,451 towards open space.
