Cardiff regeneration scheme milestone reached

Cardiff Council has arrived at a major milestone in its scheme to regenerate the Channel View estate.The project in Grangetown will bring forward about 319 new highly energy-efficient, low-carbon mixed-tenure homes, including the replacement of the existing 180 council-managed properties.A preferred bidder has been identified to deliver the entire scheme, following the conclusion of the procurement process for the appointment of a developing partner for the project.Cardiff’s cabinet will consider the recommendation to delegate authority to officers in consultation with the cabinet member housing and communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, to appoint the preferred bidder to the scheme.Cllr Thorne, said: “This is an important milestone in our exciting plans for Channel View and the next step in transforming this part of Grangetown into a greener, more sustainable and more attractive neighbourhood for the community.”The scheme is a major part of our plans to increase the availability of good quality, affordable housing for the city by delivering more than 2,700 new council homes over the coming years.”There are various due diligence processes that need to take place that will enable us to move to the delivery stage of the redevelopment.The preferred bidder will bring forward the entire project, commencing with the phase one plans for 81 flats for older people to replace the existing tower block at the estate, as well as new communal facilities and a café.The redevelopment will also provide improvements to the public open space at The Marl, and the creation of public realm.The council said the preferred bidder will also work with it on the design development, consultation and planning of future phases of the redevelopment, the demolition of the existing housing stock and the construction of future phases, subject to viability.Cabinet will consider a full report on the plans at a meeting on 21 September.Ahead of the cabinet meeting, the Community & Adult Services Scrutiny Committee were due to consider the report at a meeting last night (18 September).
