In December 2018 the UK Government published a policy which laid out the commitment to a community consent-based process to find a suitable location for a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) for higher activity radioactive waste. In January 2019 the Welsh Government published an equivalent policy. Communities will be at the heart of the siting process for a GDF and a facility can only be built where both a suitable site and a willing community can be found. Construction can only start following a positive Test of Public Support and after the relevant permissions from the regulators and planning authorities have been obtained. This process is consent-based and communities will be able to work in partnership with RWM from the beginning, so that people will have the opportunity to create a future that works for them. The siting process is depicted in the figure below. Through RWM, the Government will make available Community Investment Funding of up to £1 million annually for each community that forms a Community Partnership.
