Consultation for 3,000-home army base plans extended

A consultation into initial proposals for the redevelopment of St George’s Barracks in Rutland, which could feature up to 3,000 homes, has been extended.Plans to dispose of St George’s Barracks were announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2016 and is due to be vacated by 2021.Rutland County Council and the MoD revealed in September last year that they were working on a scheme to transform the site into up to 3,000 homes.Newly confirmed details also include the provision of 34-acres of employment land, a relocated and enlarged Edith Weston Academy, a new local centre with shops and other services, a new health and wellbeing centre with GP surgery, a multi-functional community centre, and a new country park.The plans also state that more than 60 per cent of the site will be dedicated to public open space.The consultation has been extended by a further week and will now finish on 15 June 2018.
