Council agrees in principle to take ownership of replacement Lossiemouth bridge

Moray Council has agreed, in principle, to take ownership of a replacement Lossiemouth bridge, reconnecting the town with the East Beach.The existing crossing was closed in July due to safety concerns, and the Scottish Government has committed to funding the work required to reinstate it.Now ownership in principle has been decided, an option appraisal and business case will be developed and submitted to the council and Scottish Government. Funding for this is held by the Lossiemouth Community Development Trust and includes money raised by the community, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Scottish and Southern Energy.The following phase, if the project remains viable, would be the design and construction of the new bridge – funded by the Scottish Government, based on the outcome of the option appraisal and business case.After the bridge has been constructed, it’s expected that the council will take ownership, and responsibility for ongoing inspection and maintenance.Convener of Moray Council, Cllr Shona Morrison, said she is pleased with the decision taken by councillors today.
