D-Day for school replacement scheme
A school building in Sefton could soon be demolished to make way for a replacement if plans are approved next week. The Department for Education (DfE) envisages the development of a ‘net zero carbon in operation’ eight-form entry secondary school for 1,200 pupils to replace the current Deyes High School buildings in Maghull. However the sixth form, for 300 pupils, will be retained at the Deyes Lane site.Development comprises the demolition of the existing school buildings, excluding the sixth form, and the erection of a two- and three-storey new building. The facility will include indoor and outdoor sports facilities, a part-covered six court multi-use games area, covered cycle and motorcycle and car parking. A temporary access would be created from Deyes Lane for construction purposes and the provision of contractor facilities and associated works required during construction.During the construction phase part of the playing fields at St Andrews Primary would be utilised. Surveys of the school buildings have revealed that some have reached the end of their life and the scheme proposes a like-for-like replacement under the government’s School Rebuilding Programme and Public Infrastructure Project. Recommending the plans are approved with conditions, a report set to be considered by Sefton Council’s planning committee on 1 June, said: “The opportunity to provide a net carbon zero school, high quality development that has the potential to provide well planned community facilities is strongly supported. “Subject to the imposition of conditions the development is acceptable and accords with the policies in both the Local Plan and the Maghull Neighbourhood Plan made in January 2019.
