Decision due on Springfield Mill development

Plans to build a near 300-strong neighbourhood on the site of the former Springfield Mill in Maidstone look set to be approved. The project is expected to create more than 200 jobs.Redrow Homes is behind the scheme, which is earmarked for Sandling Road.The application proposes the demolition of the majority of the buildings on the site, save the grade II-listed Rag Room and the Springfield Mill chimney and beam. The latter was built in 1837 to replace an earlier chimney of 1809 on the same site.Permission is being sought for 295 dwellings comprising 218 apartments and 77 houses, with associated car parking, public realm and landscaping works. Affordable housing would be provided across 20 per cent, or 59 units.The Rag Room would be used as either residential, office or community space.A report to Maidstone Borough Council – which will decide on the application later this week – states that the project would create 194 temporary jobs, indirect and induced employment, as well as additional employment of 20 supported in local shops and services.Increased local spending including total new household expenditure of £9.7m per year is also expected.The proposals have been recommended for approval.
