Details revealed of proposed student village
Further details have been revealed of a proposed student village in Stoke-on-Trent which comprises more than 700 residences.Staffordshire University has submitted an EIA screening opinion request for a development at land off Lordship Lane.A screening opinion was provided by Stoke-on-Trent City Council on 18 October 2021 confirming that an EIA would not be required as part of earlier pre-application discussions for the new student village.”The scope of the proposals has not significantly changed since this screening opinion was provided,” a statement filed on behalf of the applicant said. “There has, however, been a change to the red edge and a revised opinion is therefore sought in the interests of completeness.”The intention of this letter is for confirmation that an EIA for the purposes of the 2017 regulations is not required in respect of the proposed development of the site.”The existing campus site is situated to the north west of the River Trent. The part of the campus within the application site currently comprises 743 existing student units which would be demolished as part of this proposal.Plans include 715 new student residences split between four cluster blocks and townhouses. The existing Clarice Cliff Court, which currently provides 297 student units, would be refurbished internally and externally providing a total of 298 units. In total across the campus there would be a net loss of 18 residences.A ‘hub’ is also proposed as part of the student village, providing educational, social and support space for students. This would include an events space and market hall, student wellbeing space, flexible use space and an outdoor seating area.
