Discount supermarket set for approval despite objections
Plans for a new discount supermarket in East Yorkshire look set to get the go-ahead later this week (13 October 2022) despite almost 140 objections.Lidl GB, supported by Lichfields, submitted a full planning application to East Riding of Yorkshire Council last year for development on land off Welton Road in Brough.Planning permission is sought for the construction of a new foodstore with a gross external area of about 23,000 sq ft and net sales area of circa 13,600 sq ft.The plans also include 120 car parking spaces, including eight disabled spaces, two electric vehicle charging points and 12 parent and child spaces. It has been estimated that the store would create 40 full-time equivalent jobs, as well as roles during construction. The application will go before the council’s planning committee on 13 October and is recommended for approval, subject to conditions, in an officer’s report prepared for the meeting. The recommendation has been made despite 139 objections to the plans. The planning officer’s report said: “Whilst the form and design of the building would not reflect the character of the surrounding residential development, the introduction of a modern commercial development on this site would not look in congruous in its surroundings. The proposal also includes a substantial landscaping scheme which would further help the development assimilate into its surroundings on the approach into the town.”Whilst the scheme would be close to neighbouring properties, it has been designed so as not to cause harm to the amenities of these residents and is accompanied by a noise impact assessment which demonstrates that, subject to conditions, noise levels from the development would be acceptable and would not cause harm to the amenities of adjacent properties. Matters of highways, flood risk, drainage and nature conservation are also assessed to be acceptable.”The project team includes Lichfields, Bryan G Hall, Weetwood, Sirius, GDP, Enzygo, FDA Landscape, AWA, RPS Group, Wardell Armstrong, NoiseAssess Ltd and Signify.
