Double thumbs up for Newcastle projects

Two major schemes – including the redevelopment of the North Stand at Newcastle Falcons’ Kingston Park and building a temporary mixed-use scheme on the site of the city’s former Odeon cinema – have both been approved.The proposals for the stadium concern the North Stand, with Newcastle Rugby Ltd set to increase its capacity more than 1,500 in a move which would allow the ground to cater for 11,730 spectators.The project would “significantly” increase the number of covered seats and hospitality spaces, which have both sold out on a number of occasions in recent seasons.Also included in the proposals are new changing facilities for the seniors, academy and coaches, a physio studio and fitness suite, the creation of a new Fan Zone and service area at the East Stand, the relocation of the electronic scoreboard, a new community all-weather pitch with eight floodlights, and improved car parking facilities with a 538-space site to be built behind the redeveloped stand.An all-weather community pitch with floodlights and changing rooms is set to be installed too, which would be used by schools, clubs and community groups, as well as college and university teams.Meanwhile, plans to build a temporary mixed-use scheme on the site of the former Odeon cinema in Newcastle have also been approved, despite receiving opposition from Metrocentre and Eldon Square operator intu.Danielli Holdings initially unveiled the Stack scheme in October 2017 and believes it will have a “hugely positive impact” on the regeneration of Pilgrim Street, as well as tourism and culture in the city.The application proposes the installation of 50 shipping containers over two storeys on the land, which would house restaurants, cafés, bars and shops. It will also have a pop-up tipi in the winter months and an enchanted garden during the summer.Danielli applied for temporary planning permission for a four-year period from 1 January 2018 to 31 May 2022.Two letters of objection had been received on behalf of intu Properties with the company stating that the city centre has “attracted a significant increase in food and drink uses and there are concerns that these uses are now reaching saturation point”.However, the application has ultimately been approved by Newcastle City Council.
